My New Favorites

Summer is in full-swing, and sometimes that means going on vacation (I’ve been to Idaho and San Diego so far!) And sometimes that means staying in my air conditioned house, hiding from the heat!

What's up with this, Portland?! This is NOT normal for us!
What’s up with this, Portland?! This is NOT normal for us!

So I thought I’d share some of my new favorites: from TV and movies to books and podcasts!

TV Shows

Okay, so I am totally obsessed with the following shows (and mini-series) for vastly different reasons, but I think they’re all worth a watch. When it comes to shows, I’m always willing to watch at least the first episode to see if it hooks me in, and these all pass that test (some to the form of obsession!)

Snowfall (FX) – This show is based in early 1980’s Los Angeles (during my pre-teen years and near where I grew up!) it’s all about the beginning of Crack. That may not sound all that appealing, but trust me: but the acting and the drama may be just as addictive as the crack itself.

Grace and Frankie (Netflix) – I love love love Lily Tomlin, and even though this show has been around for awhile now, I just want to say how sweet and funny I think it is!

I’m Dying Up Here (Showtime) – This show is based in L.A. in the 1970’s and centers around a comedy club, its comedians and it’s hard-edged owner, Goldie – played brilliantly by Melissa Leo. I got Showtime so I could watch Twin Falls (which is amazing, of course!) but WHOA! I am sooo in love with this show! I binge-watched the first 7 episodes and now I have to wait for each new episode to come out on Sundays… SAD! But it’s LOL funny and also dives deep into the complex character’s lives. LOVE it!

Insecure (HBO) – Oh god, if you want to watch a show that could be the very definition of painfully funny, you have to watch Insecure. Issa Rae wrote and stars in it, and it’s fucking brilliant.

The Defiant Ones (HBO) – I guess this one is more of a documentary, but because there are multiple episodes, I’m counting it more like a mini-series. I also thought it was going to be about Dr. Dre, and it is… but it’s also about SO MUCH MORE. If you like music at all, but especially from the 1970’s-1990’s (and not just rap!) you’ll definitely want to watch this show.

Downward Dog (ABC) – Okay, maybe I can’t resist a cute show about an even cuter dog and his person, but this show has my heart!

And if you haven’t watched them already, I LOVE: The OA (Netflix), Master of None (Netflix), Stranger Things (Netflix), and GirlBoss (Netflix).

Guilty Pleasures:

The Real Housewives (of O.C. or NY) (Bravo) I just can’t quit these ladies.

The Challenge XXX (MTV)

Disappeared (ID Discovery), Gone (ID Discovery) or just about any show about missing people (true crime and fiction, alike!)

Love Connection (FOX) – Andy Cohen hosts this remake of the 80’s dating show I used to love to watch with my Mom!
